Kinderdijk

An unforgettable time travel…

This unique site is for history lovers as well as for dreamers who love green landscapes. As a visitor, you can enter in different museums to better understand the story and the origin of this place and to experiment the miller life! An interactive film explains to you the functioning of windmill as a pump, to manage the groundwater and the rainwater, and the progress from the form to electricity. Did you know that 26% of the Netherland are below sea level? The management of water is one of the many talents of dutch culture. We were so impressed by this 19 windmills surrounded by water, greenery and extensive pastures. After this film you learned the legend of Kinderdijk and the origin of this likeable name which means the chidren’s dike! I’ll leave you a little suspense about that…

Finally, you can visit two windmills during the journey. In the first one you discover how the millers lived in their modest home with 12 childrens sometimes in no more than 3 rooms. Seeing the wings of the mill turn live was an unforgettable and noisy experience! For the second opened mill, the visitors travel back. You can talk to a real miller who lives there and walk around the garden to feed the two dutch goats.
Kinderdijk could be visited by boat, hiking, cycling and event horse-drawn! This UNESCO World Heritages open all year round.
